1. TROPMET-2001

The IMS organised its 10th annual symposium TROPMET-2001 during 6-9 February, 2001 at Mumbai under the auspices of Local chapter of IMS. The focal theme of the symposium was “Meteorology for Sustainable Development”. The symposium was inaugurated by the Hon’ble Chief Minister of Maharashtra Shri Vilas Rao Deshmukh on 6 February, 2001. Prof. B.L.Mungekar, Vice Chancellor of University of Mumbai and Shri V.Ranganathan, Chief Secretary of Government of Maharashtra were also present. The function was held at the main auditorium of TIFR and attended by a large gathering of nearly 400 people. The proceedings of TROPMET-2000 held at Cochin were also released by the Chief Guest on this occasion. As a part of the inaugural function, the society conferred Fellowship on Dr George Joseph, Prof S.K.Dube and Prof P.V.Joseph. Prof M.S.Swaminthan was conferred Honorary Fellowship at a separate function organised in the afternoon of 6 February, 2001. The symposium was attended by nearly 250 scientists from different organisations. A special feature of this symposium was that the subject of Seismology was first introduced by the society as one of the themes of TROPMET-2001. Another highlight of the symposium was the participation of more than 70 user agencies including private sector companies. The symposium concluded with a Panel discussion on 9 February, 2001 which was chaired by Shri D.R.Sikka. Dr S.M.Kulshrestha, former President IMS, Ms. J. Shankaran, Principal Secretary (Home) Govt. of Maharashtra, Shri Shravan Kumar, DDGM RMC, Mumbai and Dr Akhilesh Gupta, Jt. Secretary, IMS also participated in the discussion.

2. International Conference and WMO workshop on Monsoon during 20-26 March, 2001 at New Delhi [ICOM-2001]

Indian Meteorological Society and India Meteorological Department have jointly organised an International Conference on Forecasting Monsoons from days to Years during 20 to 22 March, 2001 at India Habitat Centre, New Delhi. A WMO workshop on Monsoon Studies was also organised during 23-26 March, 2001 at the same venue. The international conference was inaugurated by Shri Bachi Singh Rawat, Hon’ble Minister of State for Science & Technology on 20 March, 2001. Prof G.O.P.Obasi, Secretary General World Meteorological Organisation; Prof V.S.Ramamurthy, Secretary, Department of Science & Technology; Prof Jagadish Shukla, Chairman International Organising Committee; Dr R.R.Kelkar, Director General, IMD & Chairman NOC; Dr S.K.Srivastav, President IMS; Dr S.M.Kulshrestha, Fellow IMS & Chairman Sir Gilbert Walker Award Committee; Prof S.K.Dube, Chairman LOC and Dr Akhilesh Gupta, Jt. Secretary IMS & Convener IOC were also present on the dais. The function was attended by nearly 500 people. Prof G.O.P.Obasi, Secretary General WMO delivered the Key Note address. As a part of the inaugural function, the society presented the “First Sir Gilbert Walker Gold Medal” to J.Shukla, Professor at George Mason University and Director COLA, USA. A Special issue of Vayu Mandal containing proceedings of INTROMET was also released on this occasion. The conference was attended by nearly 200 participants including about 50 leading international scientists from several countries like, USA, U.K., France, China, Japan, Australia, Korea, etc. The WMO workshop was inaugurated by Shri Bachi Singh Rawat, Hon’ble Minister of State for Science & Technology on 23 March, 2001. Prof V.S.Ramamurthy, Secretary, Department of Science & Technology; Prof Jagadish Shukla, Chairman International Organising Committee; Dr R.R.Kelkar, Director General, IMD & Chairman NOC; Dr S.K.Srivastav, President IMS; Dr G.J.Holland, Co-Chairman IOC, Dr John McBride, Co-Chairman IOC, Dr Joseph Adejokun, Representative from WMO and Prof S.K.Dube, Chairman LOC were also present on the dais. The workshop was attended by nearly 140 participants including WMO designated 34 participants from abroad. The organisers of the events received good financial support from international organisations like WMO, UCAR, COLA. India Meteorological Department; National Centre for Medium Range Weather Forecasting; Centre for Atmospheric Sciences, IIT Delhi and several other organisations in Delhi provided man power and financial support to organise the conference. The conference and the workshop have been a grand success.

Felicitation of Professor Murli Manohar Joshi, Hon’ble Minister for Human Resource Development, Science & Technology and Ocean Development

The Indian Meteorological Society in collaboration with Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi and several other societies, organised a function on 20 August, 2001 at IIT Delhi to felicitate Prof Murli Manohar Joshi, Hon’ble Minister of HRD, S&T and Ocean Development for his being elected to the prestigious Honorary Membership of the Russian Academy of Natural Sciences. The function was attended by nearly 1500 members of IMS, other scientists, faculty and students of IIT Delhi and other Universities, and officials of several ministries of Govt. of India. There has been a very good media coverage of the function.

Report on Hazard-2001

The International Conference on Seismic hazard with particular reference to Bhuj earthquake of January 26, 2001 was held during 3-5 October, 2001 at the Hotel Samrat, Chanakyapuri , New Delhi. The Inaugural Function was held on 3 October at 9 a.m. Shri Bachi Singh Rawat, Hon’ble Minister of State for Science & Technology was the Chief Guest . Prof V.S.Ramamurthy, Secretary DST presided over the function. Dr H.K.Gupta, Secretary DOD, Dr R.R.Kelkar, DGM, Prof. S.K.Dube, President IMS, Dr S.K.Srivastav, Indian Coordinator-Hazard-2001 & Addl. DG, IMD, Dr Roger Bilham, International Coordinator-Hazard-2001 and Dr Akhilesh Gupta, Secretary IMS were also present on the dais. As a part of the function, society has conferred Fellowship on Dr R.R.Kelkar and Dr S.K.Srivastav. Nearly 300 people participated in the Inaugural Function.

A large number of Indian & International Seismologists participated in the conference. More than 150 research papers were presented in the conference on following themes:

* Geodetic investigations and role of GPS and remote sensing
* Ground acceleration and engineering aspects.

*b. Earthquake processes

c. Seismotectonics with special reference to Indian subcontinent

f. Mathematical modelling and simulation studies

g. Recent trends in seismic monitoring:

* Seismic instrumentation
* Data processing
* GPS and related studies

h. Engineering aspects and earthquake resistant design

i. Earthquake precursory studies
There has been a good media coverage of the conference. The conference has been a grand success.

TROPMET-2002

The IMS organised its 11th annual event TROPMET-2002 entitled National Symposium and Workshop on Forecasting and Mitigation of Meteorological Disasters: Tropical Cyclones, Floods and Droughts during 11-14 February, 2002 at Bhubaneswar under the auspices of Local chapter of IMS. The symposium was inaugurated by the Hon’ble Chief Minister of Orissa Shri Naveen Patanaik on 11 February, 2002. Shri Biswa Bhushan Harichandan, Minister for Revenue., Govt. of Orissa was the Guest of Honour. Shri D.P.Bagchi, Chief Secretary, Govt. of Orissa, Dr R.R.Kelkar, Director General, India Meteorological Department, Prof. S.K.Dube, President Indian Meteorological Society and Dr Akhilesh Gupta, Secretary, Indian Meteorological Society were also present on the Dais. The function was held at the Convention Hall of Hotel Swosti Plaza and attended by a large gathering of nearly 400 people. As a part of the inaugural function, the society conferred Honorary Fellowship on Dr J.S.Fein, Director, National Science Foundation, USA. Dr R.R.Kelkar, Director General, India Meteorological Department presented Mausam Award to Dr M.Rajeevan, Director, Meteorological Office, Pune. On this occasion, the Chief Guest released the Abstract Volume and Souvenir of the symposium. The Local Chapter of the Society had organised Drawing and Essay Writing Competition for school children a few weeks prior to TROPMET-2002. The First and Second prize winners were given certificates and mementoes on the occasion of Inauguration of TROPMET-2002. The symposium was attended by nearly 250 scientists from different organisations. Nearly 70 oral and 45 short oral presentations were made in the symposium. The symposium concluded with a Panel discussion on 12 February, 2001 in which Professor S.K.Dube, Dr R.R.Kelkar, Prof U.C.Mohanty and Shri Aurbindo Behra, OSDMA, Govt. of Orissa participated.

Following the Symposium, a Workshop on the same theme was organised on13 and 14 February, 2002 for the benefit of Central/State/District level Disaster Managers, NGOs, Media Personnel, School/College Teachers, etc. The Workshop was inaugurated by Dr R.R.Kelkar, Director General, India Meteorological Department. Prof S.K.Dube, Prof U.C.Mohanty, Shri Aurbindo Behra and Shri D.C.Gupta, Convener, LOC of TROPMET-2002 were also present on the Dais. Nearly 200 participants from various organizations attended the Workshop. The basic structure of the workshop include: Presentation by Topic Chairman followed by a panel discussion on the Session Theme and Question- Answer session. The Concluding session of the workshop was presided over by Professor S.K.Dube, President IMS in which all Topic Chairmen also participated and presented the recommendations originating from their session.
